Happy Valentines Day

Red heart

Valentines Day has become very commercialised in recent years, but it’s roots go right back medieval times.

Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record an association between romantic love and Valentines Day although there are records of ancient fertility rites held during February from Roman times. The church officially recognised Valentines day in the 1960s, to honour a number of early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The process of giving gifts and cards on Valentines day didn’t start until the later half of the 20th century though, and has grown since then.

The heart, being the symbol of love, and the colour red are usually associated with Valentines. Today chocolates and roses are the traditional gifts, although you can find numerous other ideas in the shops. Personally I find it all a bit over commercialised, but enjoy having a bit of fun and making an effort for Valentines. The challenge is to do so without spending a fortune.
