Swimming Red Squirrel
19 November 2007, by Heavens Paradox

The Red Squirrel is becoming increasingly rare in the UK, so it was a bit of a shock when one was found swimming in the Lake District! The squirrel was unharmed from it’s dip, though it did grab a lift back to shore on a passing boat.
While the Red Squirrel is the native British species, the Grey Squirrel is more common today. The American Grey Squirrel species is more adaptable and tougher, and has driven the smaller Red Squirrel out of much of Britain. The Forestry Commission is working on conservation strategies to provide habitats that are appealing to the Red Squirrel while deterring Greys. Hopefully this will be successful and we won’t lose the Red Squirrel to extinction.
