Vans and Van Racks

I see many people who own vans driving around with no equipment of theirs on the top of their vans, and think to myself, surely they could utilise the roof of the van and put some big ladders on there or some other big equipment.
All you would is some of those van racks and then attach the van racks to the roof of your van and strap on your equipment and away you go.
I’m just trying to wander where some people going around in vans without van racks on there van actually keep things that won’t fit in the back of their van? Do they ask to borrow the clients ladders for example?
I think it makes perfect sense to buy your own van rack and then utilize the extra space on the top of the van. Just a random thought I had after seeing so many vans with no van rack on their roof!
